The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS) is a regional ocean-observing program that provides science-based information and decision support for Southern California’s coastal and ocean environments. It brings together observations, data services, models, and forecasts to help users access information about changing ocean conditions. SCCOOS works with partner programs, principal investigators, staff, and advisory and governance committees, and shares program documents, strategic plans, proposals, and progress reports.
Its observation network draws on a range of platforms and methods, including high-frequency radar, gliders, shore stations, buoys and moorings, and ship-based sampling. Through its data catalog and CalOOS Data Portal, the system offers access to observations and essential ocean variables, as well as models, forecasts, and related services. Public-facing tools include dashboards for automated shore stations, surface current mapping, harmful algal blooms, and El Niño monitoring. SCCOOS also communicates findings and program updates through news, newsletters, the California Harmful Algal Bloom Bulletin, and mailing lists. Together, these resources support access to coastal ocean information for the region.
