The South Canterbury Genealogy Society is a New Zealand community organisation for people interested in family history, whakapapa, local records and the stories linking generations. It welcomes beginners and experienced researchers alike, offering opportunities to share knowledge, ask questions and learn from others. The society holds monthly meetings from February to December, with discussions, research updates and guest topics. Meetings take place at 1:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month in the Community Room at Timaru Library, and visitors are welcome.
Members and visitors can also access volunteer research assistance at the society’s Help Desk, held at the library on Wednesdays from 9:00am to noon and Sundays from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Its website provides a range of family-history resources, including information on school rolls, shipping and ships, images, church records, cemeteries, funeral sheets, the Timaru Herald Amalgamated Index and a South Canterbury World War II project. The society shares member interests and activities, offers a membership form and provides links and galleries for exploring local genealogical material.
