Founded in 1964, the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) is described as the largest family history group in Southern California, with a focus that reaches beyond the region. Based in Burbank, California, the society helps people explore their ancestry through research resources, educational programs, and opportunities to connect with fellow family historians.

SCGS offers access to a library and catalog, collection highlights, research assistance, databases, and genealogy resources covering Southern California, California, the United States, and international topics. Its programs include webinars, Lunch & Learn sessions, and interest groups for communities, regions, and genealogy software users. Groups include British Isles, Chinese, French-Canadian, German, Italian, Nikkei, Hispanic, and African American genealogy interests.

The society also shares articles, stories, research tips, newsletters, books, and information about new library acquisitions. Members can participate in events, use online services, and support the organization through membership and donations. Whether someone is beginning family research or investigating a longstanding genealogical question, SCGS provides resources and learning opportunities to support the work.
