S.T.A.R.T.

The S.T.A.R.T. Institute (School Transportation Active-Threat Response Training) provides nationally recognized professional development focused on threat recognition, prevention, de-escalation, and emergency response in transportation settings. Since 2015, it has trained tens of thousands of transportation professionals across the United States through practical, hands-on, scenario-based instruction.

Its four divisions—START Pre-K, START K-12, START Campus, and START Transit—serve professionals transporting preschool children, school and college students, and members of the public. Programs combine classroom learning with realistic exercises that help participants think critically, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions under pressure. Training is developed and delivered by transportation professionals, law enforcement leaders, retired U.S. Secret Service personnel, behavioral health specialists, emergency responders, and other subject matter experts.

The Institute draws on research and guidance from organizations including the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center, the Transportation Security Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security. Its mission is to equip transportation professionals with practical skills and confidence to better protect passengers, recognizing that prepared drivers are essential to safer transportation systems.
