The National Center for School Mental Health (NCSMH) is a center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine dedicated to advancing comprehensive mental health systems in schools. Established in 1995, it works to improve youth well-being and support student success through research, training, policy, and practical guidance at local, state, and national levels. Its vision is for every student to thrive in a safe, supportive school environment.
NCSMH offers research and evaluation, training and technical assistance, and resources to help schools and partners strengthen mental health services for children, adolescents, and families. Its work includes guidance on school mental health foundations, quality improvement, measurement-based care, educator well-being, and coordination between schools and health care teams. The Center also shares policy resources and practice tools, including the SHAPE system, which provides school mental health assessments to help users evaluate and improve their systems. In addition, NCSMH publishes guidance, runs a mailing list, and convenes the annual Advancing School Mental Health Conference, bringing together people working to support student well-being.
