School of Traditional Skills (STS) is an online homesteading education provider founded by Josh and Carolyn Thomas of Homesteading Family. Its mission is to help people build practical self-reliance through clear, step-by-step instruction from experienced teachers. The school serves learners with varied circumstances, from families living on acreage to people gardening in small yards, rentals, or balconies, and offers guidance for beginners as well as those developing new skills.
Members can access classes, articles, printable skill sheets, and a community where they can ask questions, share progress, and exchange advice. Topics include gardening and extending the growing season, sourdough and bread-making, food preservation and pressure canning, herbal preparations, and other homesteading skills. Lessons are presented by instructors such as Joel Salatin, Sally Fallon Morell, Melissa K. Norris, Justin Rhodes, and Shawn and Beth Dougherty, with demonstrations filmed on location. The school describes its teaching team as more than 30 instructors with over 300 years of combined expertise.
