Schoonschip
@schoonschipamsterdam.org
The people behind Schoonschip aimed to create Europe’s most sustainable floating community in Amsterdam. We developed 46 houseboats on 30 plots for over 100 residents. We challenged ourself to be circulair and biobased as possible to build and live sustainably as possible. Schoonschip is an urban ecosystem embedded within the fabric of the city: making full use of ambient energy and water for use and re-use, cycling nutrients and minimizing waste, and creating space for natural biodiversity.

About Schoonschip
Schoonschip is a pioneering brand that has developed the most sustainable floating neighborhood in Europe. Situated in Buiksloterham, Amsterdam-Noord, this ecologically and socially sustainable residential area consists of 46 households living on 30 houseboats, with half of the boats designed as two-on-one barges. The community also features a shared meeting place on one barge. Over the course of ten years, the dedicated residents of Schoonschip worked tirelessly to design, develop, and realize this remarkable project.
The water homes in Schoonschip prioritize sustainability and social well-being. They are highly insulated, not connected to the natural gas network, and heated by water-sourced heat pumps that utilize aquathermy. Passive solar heat is also maximized, while solar boilers and heat pumps provide hot water. Each home is equipped with photovoltaic solar panels and a large battery for energy storage. A collective smart grid allows for efficient electricity exchange among the households. Waste management is also environmentally conscious, with separate systems for grey and black water.
Beyond its impressive sustainability features, Schoonschip fosters a strong sense of community and collaboration. The residents work together in various working groups to explore topics such as smart grid and energy, new sanitation methods, shared mobility, ecology, water quality, and communication. The brand actively embraces an open-source approach, sharing experiences and knowledge with others to advance sustainable living practices.
Schoonschip is not only a residential area but also a platform for innovation and inspiration. The brand aims to be at the forefront of sustainable technologies and solutions, collaborating with innovative companies and institutions. They also offer advice and guidance to those interested in sustainable living on the water. With their diverse and creative community, Schoonschip plans to implement numerous initiatives, such as collective food procurement, floating gardens, expanding shared mobility options, utilizing the community space for various activities, and even organizing excursions for those interested in sustainable living on the water.
With its rich history, starting from a collective citizen initiative to the realization of its floating homes, Schoonschip is a remarkable testament to the power of collaboration and sustainable living.
