The International Alfred Schutz Circle for Phenomenology and Interpretive Social Science is an organization dedicated to the study and discussion of Alfred Schutz’s work and its significance for phenomenology and the social sciences. It brings together scholars interested in interpretive approaches to social life, including questions about meaning, collective experience, and the ways people understand their worlds.
The Circle supports this academic community through conferences, research, and publications. Its conferences have taken place in locations including Vienna, Tokyo, Porto Alegre, Konstanz, Buenos Aires, and New York, and feature presentations and keynote lectures by researchers in the field. The organization also shares news, maintains publications and bibliographic resources, and promotes calls for papers, including special issues of Schutzian Research. Its activities include the Ilse Schutz Memorial Prize for junior scholars, which recognizes emerging academic work. Through these initiatives, the Circle provides opportunities for scholarly exchange and helps sustain research connected to Schutz’s ideas.
