The Schwarz-Schilling Foundation is a charitable organization established in 2003 by Christian Schwarz-Schilling to provide a framework for his longstanding work promoting international understanding and strengthening civil society. Guided by its board, which includes Maria do Rosário Almeida Ritter, Thomas Mann and Friedhelm Ost, the foundation engages where assistance, dialogue, diplomacy and scholarly expertise are needed. Its stated aims include fostering international-mindedness, tolerance across cultures and understanding among peoples, as well as supporting people persecuted for political, racial or religious reasons, refugees and displaced persons.
It also promotes education, learning and science. The foundation adapts its work to changing circumstances and focuses on different regions and fields. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a significant area of activity, reflecting Christian Schwarz-Schilling’s decades of work there in support of understanding among communities.
The foundation also works on issues involving China, including efforts to encourage dialogue and better relations between Chinese and Tibetan communities
