Santa Casa Misericórdia Azinhaga | Azinhaga

Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Azinhaga is a historic charitable institution serving the community of Azinhaga, Portugal. Established by four confraternities in the sixteenth century, it is based at a rural architectural landmark whose church was completed in 1572. Guided by a Christian tradition of assistance, the institution has historically cared for people in need. Its small hospital treated the sick, while its “house of the poor” offered shelter and food to people seeking help. Although changing circumstances and the loss of property severely limited its resources, the Santa Casa continued its charitable work.

Today, its stated aims reflect a broader approach to social support and local development. These include services and initiatives such as day centres, toy libraries, libraries, an employment club, and home support, particularly for older people. The institution also seeks to address social needs at their roots, encourage residents’ participation, improve living conditions, and promote economic development and job creation in Azinhaga. Its work is carried out with limited resources and a focus on community wellbeing.
