SCO

The Société Calédonienne d’Ornithologie (SCO) is a New Caledonian association dedicated to protecting the territory’s distinctive and fragile birdlife. It works to engage citizens, improve knowledge of local species, and safeguard birds and the habitats they depend on. Its activities combine public education, field projects, observation, and conservation initiatives, often with volunteers and partner organizations.

The SCO coordinates projects such as Revital’Isié, which brings people together to restore the ecological health of Isié Island, and supports efforts to protect the Méliphage toulou. Its work also includes community biodiversity mapping in Poum, SOS Petrels, and long-term monitoring of terrestrial birds. The association shares practical guidance on responsible birdwatching, seasonal pruning, and what to do when seabirds are found stranded. It also mobilizes a volunteer network to help monitor wild birds and raise awareness of avian disease risks.
