About ScotClans
ScotClans is a family-owned brand based in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a mission to revive and support the art of Traditional Kilt Making. The brand was born out of a shared passion between Amanda Moffet and Nikki Laird, who met during a Kilt Making Course. Dissatisfied with the declining quality of machine-sewn kilts, they sought to preserve the craftsmanship of hand-stitched kilts.
The decline of Traditional Kilt Making was attributed to the closure of shared workrooms and a growing disconnect between salespeople and craftspersons. To combat this, ScotClans aims to educate the public about the value and quality of hand-stitched kilts, as well as the importance of fair pay and respect for Kilt Makers. In addition to their advocacy work, ScotClans offers Kilt Making lessons and ongoing support to aspiring Kilt Makers.
They have also collaborated with Dumfries House to provide training opportunities for young people. Through these efforts, ScotClans is building a community of Kilt Makers and preserving this endangered craft for future generations
