About Giller Prize
The Scotiabank Giller Prize is Canada's richest literary award for fiction. Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch in honor of his late wife, Doris Giller, the prize recognizes excellence in Canadian fiction, whether in long format or short stories. With an annual cash prize of $25,000.
00, it has been instrumental in celebrating and promoting the success of Canadian authors, including renowned figures such as Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, and Mordecai Richler. In 2005, the Giller Prize joined forces with Scotiabank, leading to the birth of the Scotiabank Giller Prize. This groundbreaking co-sponsorship significantly increased the purse to $50,000 and further expanded to $140,000 in 2014.
Scotiabank's commitment to supporting the arts and Canadian literature aligns perfectly with the Giller Prize's mission. They have actively contributed to charitable causes, donating an impressive average of $50 million annually. With the goal of stimulating literary conversation and providing wide access to literature, the Scotiabank Giller Prize showcases the finest Canadian writers through various virtual and live events, ensuring inclusivity and celebrating the diverse face of Canadian fiction.
