The Scotland Historical Society is a local organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Scotland, Connecticut, for residents and others interested in the town. Settled in 1700 and incorporated in 1857, Scotland has a history the Society has worked to protect since its formation in 1979, when it became successor trustee of the Edward Waldo House and its contents.
The Society maintains the 1715 Waldo House as a historic site and opens it to visitors for seasonal tours. The house displays generations of Waldo family possessions, including antiques, books, and paintings, while docents share the family’s story and its connections to local and national history. Exhibits have highlighted the four Waldo brothers who fought in the American Revolution, as well as later family members involved in abolitionism, transcendentalism, business, women’s causes, and civil rights.
Visitors can attend scheduled open-house days, with free admission and donations welcomed. The Society also provides town history, family stories, events, and photo galleries through its website, and invites anyone interested in Scotland’s past to attend its monthly meetings.
