About screendna.org
This open letter is a cross-disciplinary initiative bringing together life sciences researchers, biotechnology and AI leaders, and policy and national security experts. Its signatories call on U. S.
legislators to require screening and recordkeeping for synthetic nucleic acid orders and for equipment used to make them. The letter explains that synthetic DNA supports vaccine development, basic research, and broader access to biotechnology, while also presenting a potential misuse risk. It argues that screening can help address this risk by checking sequences for concerns and verifying customers before orders are shipped.
Recording orders and sequence data can also support investigations and help trace suspicious activity. The initiative notes that many responsible providers already apply voluntary safeguards, including through industry efforts such as the International Gene Synthesis Consortium, and urges Congress to establish a consistent national standard. It also encourages states to align their requirements with federal and industry guidance.
Rather than selling products or services, the letter advocates a policy measure intended to protect public trust and reduce biosecurity risks while preserving the benefits of biotechnology
