About Somerset & Dorset Railway
The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust preserves and operates a historic railway at Midsomer Norton in North Somerset, set among the Mendip Hills. Visitors can experience a journey along more than a mile of the former Somerset & Dorset main line, which connected Bath and Bournemouth before closing in 1966. Trains usually feature a diesel shunter and Mark 1 coaches or a diesel multiple unit, with services running on most weekends and selected other days.
The railway offers attractions for families, history enthusiasts and railway fans. Visitors can explore the Victorian-era station, a museum about the line’s history, a working signal box, restored gardens, a World War II pillbox and an Anderson shelter. Refreshments are available in a restored buffet car, while the station shop sells books, gifts, clothing, cards, railway models and local-style treats. The railway also hosts seasonal events and experiences, including Santa visits and diesel driving tasters.
