Sea Collective

Sea Collective is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on ocean conservation, research, and sustainable fisheries. Through sailing-based expeditions, it works to address a global data gap by collecting information about marine environments and the social systems of tropical small-scale fishing communities. Its research is intended to support the design and management of marine protected areas (MPAs) that protect reefs and fish while respecting the livelihoods, cultures, and rights of the people who depend on them.

The organization combines scientific methods with collaboration and engagement with local communities. Its work aims to create a practical template for equitable, adaptive ocean stewardship, aligned with the global 30x30 conservation framework. Sea Collective’s activities include the Megatransect, an approach to gathering data, and research-vessel expeditions using sailboats. It also shares stories from fishing communities and conservationists to broaden understanding of ocean protection. By placing fisherfolk at the center of conservation discussions, Sea Collective seeks to help coastal communities and marine ecosystems thrive together.
