SEAGLOW is a European project focused on helping small-scale fishing fleets reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions in the Baltic and North Sea basins. Its name stands for Sustainable Energy Applications for Green and Low-impact Operation of small-scale fishing boats. Working through a multidisciplinary partnership that includes industrial partners, the project tests and compares five technological applications on fishing vessels, gathering sensor data to assess their effects over time and explore how technologies might work together.

The solutions featured include hybrid electric drivetrains, durable polymer-based coatings designed to prevent fouling and reduce drag, and low-cost permanent sensors that can inform sailing behaviour. By evaluating these applications in real-world cases, SEAGLOW aims to improve vessel performance and reduce the environmental impact of fishing operations. The project also supports the European Union’s Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” and contributes to efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and restore marine ecosystems.
