About Sean Sherman
NĀTIFS. org | Minneapolis MN is a brand dedicated to promoting Indigenous foodways education and facilitating Indigenous food access. Chef Sean Sherman, who was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, founded the brand with the mission to reclaim and celebrate the traditional cooking methods and ingredients of Native American ancestors.
After realizing the lack of Native American restaurants throughout most of North America, Chef Sherman embarked on a journey to research and rediscover the authentic food traditions of his own heritage and other dispossessed Indigenous people. He founded The Sioux Chef, a company that creates regional Indigenous foods using products from tribal producers, Native heirloom agricultural products, wild foraged foods, and protein alternatives. In addition to providing comprehensive nutrition, Chef Sherman believes that native plants can serve as powerful medicines.
He aims to tackle the root causes of health disparities and cultural exploitation by reconnecting Native Americans with their traditional foodways, promoting economic development, establishing food sovereignty, and preserving tribal history and culture. To support their mission, NĀTIFS operates the Indigenous Food Lab, a professional Indigenous Kitchen and Training Center, and the Indigenous Food Lab Market. Through speaking engagements, community dinners, culinary classes, and their James Beard Award-winning cookbook, Chef Sherman and the brand are actively influencing communities to promote change and create a center for Indigenous education.
NĀTIFS envisions a future where Indigenous communities have access to healthy, traditional foods, and where the power of Native history and culture is used to counteract the multigenerational impacts of colonialism and dispossession. Join them in celebrating Native food traditions and supporting Indigenous foodways
