About Sean Smuda
Sean Smuda is a Berlin-based brand that encompasses a diverse range of artistic projects and endeavors. With a background in fine arts education from prestigious institutions such as l'Académie Royale des Beaux Art in Brussels and the Boston Museum School, Smuda's work spans various mediums and disciplines. His artistic projects include rewriting archives, performance rooted in Contact Improvisation dance, and experimental opera.
Smuda's current paintings utilize thrift store acrylics, felt, markers, and collage to explore the intersection of organic and mechanical behaviors and environments. Beyond his artistic practice, Smuda has also curated community-based galleries in both Minneapolis and Berlin. He has served as a Cultural Liaison to Tours, France and initiated Blown Derivatives, a collaborative project that investigates socio-economic borders after 9/11 with international artists.
Smuda's work has been exhibited globally, including in Dakar, Frankfurt, Chicago, and Berlin. Notably, his work can be found in the permanent collections of institutions like the Walker Art Center. In 2022, he received the Neustart Kultur-Stipendium from the German Federal Government.
