Seebestattungen Krautsand is a family-owned maritime funeral service founded in 2002 by a family of captains. Drawing on its seafaring heritage, the company arranges cremated remains burials at sea in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, with an emphasis on service quality and the needs of bereaved families.
The company coordinates the process after cremation, including transferring the ashes into an environmentally compliant sea urn and arranging the ceremony aboard a chosen vessel. Families may attend the final voyage and shape parts of the farewell, such as music, readings and refreshments. Alternatively, they can choose a quiet, unattended burial, which may include several urns on one voyage. In either format, the captain conducts a short ceremony before the urn is committed to the sea.
After the burial, the vessel’s log records the event, and relatives receive a certificate noting the time and exact coordinates on a nautical chart. For attended ceremonies, families may also revisit the site on commemorative voyages.
