About Select Agent
The Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP) is dedicated to regulating the possession, use, and transfer of biological select agents and toxins that hold the potential to pose a severe threat to public, animal, or plant health, as well as to animal or plant products. FSAP oversees a list of 68 select agents and toxins, including those responsible for diseases such as anthrax, smallpox, foot-and-mouth disease, and ricin. Despite their potential danger, working with these materials has led to crucial scientific advancements in disease detection, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
The program is jointly managed by the Division of Select Agents and Toxins (DSAT) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Division of Agricultural Select Agents and Toxins (DASAT) at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). FSAP allows laboratories to conduct life-saving research on select agents and toxins while prioritizing safety and security. Registration with FSAP is required for entities conducting research with select agents and toxins, and the program conducts inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
The program also approves individual access to select agents and toxins, ensuring that only qualified personnel can handle these materials
