Society for Ecosystem Restoration in Northern BC

SERNbc, the Society for Ecosystem Restoration in Northern BC, is a society focused on restoring vulnerable and degraded ecosystems across northern British Columbia. Its mission is to manage ecosystem structure and function toward future conditions that sustain ecological services and human socioeconomic needs. The organization identifies, treats, and monitors restoration opportunities, while gathering and sharing technical information with members and stakeholders.

SERNbc works with First Nations, government, industry, local communities, and other partners on restoration planning and projects. Its work includes terrestrial habitat restoration through prescribed burning, thinning, and tree planting, as well as stream and fish-passage restoration and road rehabilitation. Project proposals are reviewed for alignment with the society’s mission and strategic plan; proponents must submit a preliminary application before funding can be considered.

The society also connects practitioners through a Community of Practice, workshops, conferences, webinars, and coaching. Its website provides project information, a library, links, and funding resources. Since 2013, SERNbc reports more than $2.5 million spent on restoration projects, alongside extensive habitat, stream, and road restoration.
