The San Francisco Examiner, founded in 1863 as the Democratic Press, is a renowned brand with a rich history. Originally a pro-Confederacy paper, it survived the destruction of its offices after Lincoln's assassination and emerged as the Daily Examiner in 1865. In 1880, George Hearst, a prominent mining engineer and businessman, took over the paper and later passed it on to his son, William Randolph Hearst.

With contributions from esteemed writers such as Ambrose Bierce, Mark Twain, and Jack London, The Examiner saw a surge in popularity. Known as the Monarch of the Dailies, it gained recognition for its sensational coverage and international news. Over the years, The Examiner competed with other dailies in the city and the Bay Area.

In 2000, The Examiner was sold to the Fang family as part of a deal to acquire the Chronicle. Subsequently, in 2011, it was acquired by Black Press Group.

In January 2021, Clint Reilly Communications, the owner of the Nob Hill Gazette, purchased The Examiner.
