ShakeAlert is an Earthquake Early Warning System managed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Its main objective is to detect significant earthquakes and deliver alerts to people and automated systems in just a matter of seconds before the shaking occurs. By doing so, ShakeAlert aims to minimize the impact of earthquakes and save lives as well as property. The USGS collaborates with licensed technical partners who utilize ShakeAlert Messages to notify individuals to take protective measures or to trigger automated actions. These actions might involve slowing down trains, closing water valves, activating backup generators, issuing public announcements, and more.
This website provides an array of resources for ShakeAlert System partners, which include Technical Partners, Emergency Managers, and Communication, Education & Outreach partners. It offers communication and education tools, case studies, tests and drills, licensing information, research papers, and more to aid these partners in utilizing the ShakeAlert System effectively. The primary institutions involved in the development of ShakeAlert include the USGS, California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, California Institute of Technology, University of Washington, University of California Berkeley, University of Oregon, EarthScope Consortium, University of Nevada Reno, and Central Washington University. With the collaboration of these institutions and funding partners, ShakeAlert continues to enhance earthquake preparedness and response measures.
