Sustainable Health Enterprises (SHE) is a groundbreaking social venture and 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to addressing the pressing global issue of women and girls lacking access to affordable menstrual pads. Founded in 2008 by Elizabeth Scharpf, a Harvard graduate student, SHE started its journey in Rwanda with a blender in their backpacks and emerged with a sustainable plan to tackle this problem. The root cause was revealed when Elizabeth discovered that pads cost more than a day's wages for factory workers in Mozambique, resulting in significant absenteeism.

In Rwanda alone, the repercussions were staggering, with a potential loss of $115 million in GDP per year. To combat this issue in a sustainable way, SHE collaborated with a network of technical, program, and business partners through their SHE28 campaign. They aim to dispel the misconception that donated pads provide a lasting solution.
