Shelter to Soldier

Shelter to Soldier is a nonprofit organization that has brought post-9/11 veterans together with trained rescue dogs since 2012. Its mission, “Saving Lives, Two at a Time,” focuses on helping veterans and dogs recover, build purposeful partnerships, and move forward together. The organization rescues dogs from local shelters, including animals that may be overlooked, and prepares them through training and care for lives of service and companionship.

Its flagship Psychiatric Service Dog Program pairs highly trained rescue dogs with veterans experiencing invisible wounds. Additional services include an Emotional Support Animal Program, a Canine Ambassadors therapy dog team, a Morale Dog Program, community outreach, and educational services for military and first responder communities. Certified therapy dogs and volunteer handlers also provide free visits offering comfort to military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Shelter to Soldier supports each dog through medical care, safe housing, and a 12- to 18-month training program, followed by training with the veteran handler.
