The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) is dedicated to improving the care and welfare of shelter animals through comprehensive guidelines and resources. Established in 2010, the ASV published its second edition of the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters in December 2022, reflecting the latest advancements in shelter medicine. These guidelines cater to a diverse array of organizations including municipal animal services, humane societies, and foster-based groups, ensuring that all personnel involved in animal care are equipped with best practices for health and safety.

In addition to the guidelines, ASV provides various resources such as training opportunities, a career center, and tools like the Protocol Repository, enabling shelters to enhance their operational capabilities. The organization also hosts events, professional development through continuing education, and supports an engaged community through student chapters and membership benefits. Committed to accessible information, ASV ensures its materials accommodate a wide audience, contributing significantly to both animal welfare and the well-being of the staff in the animal care sector.
