SHEM (Société Hydro-Électrique du Midi) is a major hydroelectricity producer in southwest France and a subsidiary of ENGIE. It operates 57 power plants and 12 major dams across the Pyrenees and the Lot and Dordogne river areas. With 785 MW of installed capacity, SHEM generates nearly 1,850 GWh of renewable electricity each year, equivalent to the annual consumption of around one million people. Its flexible hydropower also supports the balance and security of the electricity grid.
Beyond electricity generation, SHEM manages and maintains its facilities, drawing on regional operating teams, a maintenance workshop, and engineering and support services. Its work includes projects to keep installations safe and in good working order, while meeting environmental requirements. The company also engages with the many uses of water through activities such as low-water flow support, industrial tourism, and information about downstream risks. An established regional employer with around 320 staff, SHEM contributes to local economies through its workforce and annual procurement of works, services, and supplies.
