About Sheriffs
The South African Board for Sheriffs is a statutory body established under the Sheriffs’ Act. Their mission is to maintain the esteem of, enhance the status of, and improve the standard of training and functions performed by sheriffs. Sheriffs are appointed by the Minister for Justice and are responsible for performing functions assigned by law within their jurisdiction.
Deputy sheriffs can be appointed with approval from the Board to perform the functions of a sheriff. The Board also has control over the issuing of Fidelity Fund Certificates, which are required for a person to function as a sheriff. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development oversees the appointment and removal of sheriffs.
The Board ensures that sheriffs comply with the Code of Conduct and takes disciplinary action against any improper conduct. For the public, the Board provides information on how to lodge complaints against a sheriff or claim against the Fidelity Fund. New sheriffs can find guidance on training and development, while the legal fraternity can access resources on how to lodge complaints or claims.
