The Société d’Histoire de Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson et d’Estérel (SHSME) is a regional history society founded in 1992 to promote knowledge of the area’s past and help preserve its heritage. Serving Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson and Estérel in the Laurentians, it focuses on local history, architecture, archives, photography, and other forms of cultural heritage. The society highlights the region’s development from the 1860s to the 1960s and its distinctive Art Deco legacy, including the Estérel estate created by Baron Louis Empain and architect Antoine Courtens between 1936 and 1938.
The SHSME maintains an extensive collection of photographs and other valuable archives, supports research, and shares historical information through its website and virtual museum. Visitors can explore stories about local places, people, families, and landscapes, while members and the public are invited to conduct research at the society’s premises and contribute their knowledge. Its publications include four “Mémoires d’ici” brochures on local pioneers, daily life, and Estérel society.
