Shunkoin

Shunkoin Temple is a historic Rinzai Zen temple within the Myoshinji complex in Kyoto. Founded in 1590, it preserves cultural treasures including a bell designated an Important Cultural Property, traditional screen paintings, and a garden inspired by Ise Shrine. The temple also has ties to Zen philosopher Shin’ichi Hisamatsu and the development of Zen beyond Japan.

Shunkoin offers Japanese- and English-language experiences that introduce Zen practice and culture through meditation, tea, calligraphy, and guided temple visits. Programs include “Kissako,” a tea and Zen session combining tea preparation, seated meditation, instruction, and a tour of the temple; private Zen immersions; retreats; and online meditation gatherings. Some experiences are currently unavailable or offered only by request. The temple also provides workshops and talks on Zen, well-being, self-cultivation, and hospitality for organizations and groups. Its retreat lodging, Tetsuryūkutsu, has eight private rooms with ensuite showers and toilets, plus shared kitchen and common areas. Shunkoin welcomes visitors seeking thoughtful cultural learning in a historic Kyoto setting, with many programs requiring advance reservations.
