What's the difference between emojis, emoticons, and smileys? We all know the fun yellow faces and use them almost every day. They facilitate communication, replace complete words, and add color to our chats or emails. But what's the correct term? The terms emoji and emoticon are often used interchangeably, but there are differences between them. What is an emoticon? :-D This term is made up of the words emotion and icon. They are short strings of symbols, letters, or numbers that represent facial expressions and postures. Emoticons can liven up text and convey moods. :-D indicates laughter or a big smile, :-O is used to express surprise, and the combination <3 represents a heart and feelings of affection. The origin of emoticons is the stick figure's face. In 1982, a misunderstood joke among physicists raised the question: how could irony be expressed in written communication? Scott Fohlman typed the combination :-) indicating that the head had to be tilted to read it. Emoticons 1881 "Puck" What is a smiley? :-D The term comes from the English "smile." A smiley is the graphic representation of a facial expression. In written communication, it is used to indicate joy or to show that something is a joke. In the 1960s, graphic artist Harvey Ball drew a smiling face with a circle, two dots, and a curved line. This is how the symbol of good humor was born. However, he forgot to legally register it, and the symbol quickly gained popularity. The initially yellow smiling face became an emblem of rave culture. Gradually, a variety of variations appeared to express different feelings. Harvey Balls β Smiley What is an emoji? π In Japan, emoticons turned into drawings. This term consists of "e" (picture) and "moji" (symbol). Inspired by the manga world, software developer Shigetaka Kurita created the first 176 emojis in the 1990s. At that time, he worked for a Japanese mobile phone operator on a pager service and wanted to make it more appealing to teenagers. Emojis are images or pictograms. They show facial expressions and gestures in the form of faces and people. Additionally, they can also represent objects, food, activities, animals, plants, places, and other associations. This allows for more expressive communication. Nowadays, word processors and online services automatically convert emoticons into emojis. To display emojis, Unicode is converted into a graphic. Since 2010, emojis have been available on our mobile phones. Compared to emoticons, emojis offer a wider range of facial expressions and adaptations such as hair color. Also, they do not require us to tilt our heads at 90Β°. Emojis are extremely popular: 92% of Internet users use them. This surge in popularity led Oxford Dictionary to choose "emoji" as the word of the year in 2015. Due to its ability to overcome language barriers, the face with tears of joy π was chosen as the most used emoji. On July 17, World Emoji Day is celebrated unofficially. Graphic representation of emoticons Use and effects of emojis, emoticons, and smileys When communicating with others, not only the words spoken matter. We also communicate through non-verbal language, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language, and tone of voice. We look down if we are embarrassed, open our eyes wide if something surprises us, put our hand on our chin when we have to think, and furrow our brow if something displeases us. Our communication is becoming increasingly digital. We constantly send emails and chat on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Snapchat. What we would express in person with words and non-verbal gestures can be done with emojis in digital communication. These add an emotional charge to the text and help avoid misunderstandings. Many people express their feelings better with emojis than with words. In addition to facial expressions and gestures, emojis also
