Sioc

The SIOC Project, or Semantically Interlinked Online Communities, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to the development and application of an ontology designed to enhance the description of online communities within the Web of Data. By providing a comprehensive Semantic Web ontology, SIOC facilitates the integration and representation of extensive social web data using RDF (Resource Description Framework).

Adopted widely across various commercial and open-source software applications, SIOC is often used alongside the FOAF vocabulary to articulate personal profiles and social networking details. This standardization of user-generated content allows developers to create innovative semantic applications that leverage community site data, unlocking new use cases and facilitating richer online interactions.

The SIOC Project also includes a core ontology specification outlining key concepts and properties relevant to online communities, along with an implementation overview that showcases existing applications utilizing SIOC data. Engaging resources such as a dedicated mailing list for discussions, GitHub repository, and related ontologies further support its robust framework. The project is backed by the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway and funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
