SIRUB, the Sailing Sports Interest Group at Ruhr University Bochum, brings people together through sailing, whether they are university members or not. Working with the university’s AStA student association, it offers sailing courses, group training for boating licences, sailing holidays and recreational trips. Its programme combines classroom teaching, practical instruction and opportunities to learn alongside fellow enthusiasts.
SIRUB provides theory courses for Germany’s Sport Boat Licence for inland waters and coastal waters, as well as the Sport Coastal Skipper Licence for more experienced sailors. Practical training includes motorboat instruction, sailing courses in the Netherlands, and sailing trips on the Baltic Sea or Mediterranean, with examination preparation on the IJsselmeer. The organisation also offers radio training for the SRC and UBI certificates and instruction for the specialist certificate for maritime distress signals.
Theory courses are held live and are also made available online for review, supported by a free course app. Through its accessible, community-oriented approach, SIRUB helps participants build boating knowledge, develop practical skills and connect through shared sailing experiences.
