About SisAl Pilot Project
SisAl Pilot is an innovative brand with a mission to revolutionize silicon production while minimizing environmental impact. This four-year project, funded by Horizon 2020, aims to showcase a groundbreaking industrial process for silicon production. Instead of the conventional carbothermic Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) process, SisAl Pilot utilizes aluminothermic reduction of quartz in slag, employing secondary raw materials like aluminum EoL scrap and dross as replacements for carbon reductants.
Throughout the first year of the project, SisAl Pilot achieved significant milestones. Small-scale experiments were conducted, serving as crucial inputs for upcoming pilot trials at Elkem. Additionally, the project optimized the separation of different compounds through hydrometallurgical treatment and created initial HSC and LCA models.
Moving into the second year, promising results have been generated by the project partners across both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical domains. The development of mass flow models, LCA models, and business cases has bolstered confidence in the implementation and commercialization of the SisAl pilot process.
