About SLASH Filmfestival
SLASH Filmfestival, founded in 2010, is Austria's largest event dedicated to the Fantastic Film genre. In close collaboration with the Filmcasino, which remains a key venue for the festival, the Association for the Promotion of Fantastic Films has brought this extraordinary cinematic experience to life. The festival expanded in 2018 with the addition of the Metro Kinokulturhaus as an additional location, where the festival center is also situated.
SLASH Filmfestival has quickly become a fundamental event in Vienna's cultural autumn, attracting approximately 15,000 visitors annually over its eleven-day duration. Going beyond film screenings, the festival's young creative team, led by film critic and curator Markus Keuschnigg, brings the universe of Fantastic Film from the screen to the real world. Meticulously designed locations, special events, provocative performances, and the presence of international guests ensure that each edition of the festival is a unique and fabulous experience.
The film program features over sixty Austrian premieres, showcasing a diverse range of internationally celebrated documentaries, blockbusters, indie productions, and classic film screenings. In addition to the main festival in September, SLASH also organizes the SLASH einhalb-Festival in the spring, in collaboration with the Crossing Europe Filmfestival, with a strong focus on European Fantastic Film. They also host a special Christmas event featuring selected premieres that bring a different holiday spirit.
In recent years, SLASH Filmfestival has been honored by the presence of esteemed international guests, including Nicolas Cage, Udo Kier, John Waters, Crispin Glover, Julien Maury, Beatrice Dalle, Lloyd Kaufman, Bernard Rose, Joe Dante, Jörg Buttgereit, and Dario Argento
