About Small Mammal Conservation Organization
SMACON is a Small Mammal Conservation Organization dedicated to protecting and conserving small and medium-sized mammals, including bats, rodents, and pangolins. With a focus on evidence-based conservation, SMACON conducts basic ecological and conservation research to develop intervention plans that support local livelihoods, raise local capacity, and influence government policies. The organization was founded in 2016 after a realization during a hike in the Afi Mountains Wildlife Sanctuary that while megafauna received attention and protection, small-bodied mammals were being hunted unchecked, with bats being the most affected.
This urgent situation sparked the idea for SMACON, which aims to protect small mammals and their habitats through conservation efforts that safeguard local livelihoods. SMACON collaborates with sponsors and partners who generously fund and support their research, conservation, and capacity-building projects. Private donors such as Drs.
