Small Forest Karate

Small Forest Karate is a traditional Okinawan martial arts dojo in Poquoson, Virginia, established in 2011 by Kyoshi Thomas Harris. The school welcomes students to learn Okinawa Shorinryu Kensankai Karate-Do and Kobudo, carrying forward traditions rooted in Shorinryu Shorinkan Karate. The Kensankai association was founded by Harris’s teacher, Hanshi Doug Perry, whose own teacher was Shorinkan founder Shugoro Nakazato of Okinawa.

Under Harris’s direction, the dojo offers instruction in karate and kobudo, the traditional martial arts of Okinawa. Its training is intended to help students expand their physical abilities and self-defense skills while developing self-confidence and self-discipline. The school also emphasizes experiencing the arts directly and appreciating their history and heritage, rather than relying only on written accounts.

Small Forest Karate invites newcomers to join its dojo community and train alongside dedicated students. Its website provides information about the school, karate and kobudo, class schedules, rankings, dojo news, and contact details. The dojo serves the Poquoson area and welcomes people interested in studying traditional Okinawan martial arts.
