Smarter Balanced is an education-focused organization dedicated to helping teachers support student learning through an accessible, standards-aligned assessment system. Developed by teachers for teachers, its work emphasizes equity, accessibility, and preparing students from diverse backgrounds and abilities for productive futures.

Its comprehensive system combines summative and interim assessments with instructional supports, tools, and professional development resources. These offerings are intended to strengthen teaching, measure achievement and growth toward college and career readiness, and encourage critical thinking and real-world problem solving.

Smarter Balanced also provides accessibility resources designed to give students equitable access to assessments, with supports responsive to varied needs and preferences. Educators can find state-specific tools and resources by selecting their state or territory, including instructional materials and professional development opportunities available through participating locations. More than 5,000 educators have contributed to developing the system by writing and reviewing test questions and creating standards-aligned resources. Smarter Balanced assessment scores are used by more than 200 colleges across the country to determine course placement.
