SMHa is a full-service commercial architecture, planning, and interiors firm located in Mount Pleasant, SC. With a team of expert architects, they specialize in designing for the unique coastal environment of the Charleston region. Established in 1990 after Hurricane Hugo, SMHa was founded with a mission to use sustainable and resilient design to aid in the rebuilding of the historic and natural setting of South Carolina's Lowcountry.

Under the leadership of Margie Longshore, Chris Altman, Billy Connell, and Jeff Johnston, SMHa is recognized by the City of Charleston as a certified small woman-owned business. They acquired the assets and knowledge base of the original firm and retained its principals and employees. With a team of 21 individuals, including 12 registered architects and 4 architectural interns, SMHa can provide dedicated and consistent architectural services to each client throughout the entire duration of a project.

From initial vision and budget matching to programming, design, and construction close out, SMHa is committed to delivering impeccable customer service and fostering a collaborative relationship with their clients. SMHa's expertise in designing for the coastal region is evident in their understanding of the historical architectural vernacular, complex site and climate conditions, building code parameters, zoning requirements, and the local economic climate. They have established long-term relationships with local government staff and a wide range of engineering, landscape architecture, cost estimating, and construction firms in the region.

Currently, SMHa is working on several exciting projects, including Ladson Elementary School in Ladson, SC, which is a new 115,000 sq ft school for Charleston County School District.
