SMIF

Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is a donor-supported 501(c)(3) foundation serving 20 counties in south central and southeastern Minnesota, encompassing 175 communities and one Native nation. Since 1986, it has invested more than $186 million to support economic growth and strengthen the region. Its work focuses on entrepreneurship, early childhood development, and community vitality, with a commitment to helping local people and communities thrive.

SMIF offers grants for grantseekers and grantees, business financing through loans and equity investments, and training and learning opportunities. Its programs support early childhood development, entrepreneurs, and community initiatives, while its community foundation work helps local giving benefit towns and residents. The foundation also shares regional news, stories, events, and resources to connect people and encourage collaboration. Businesses, community organizations, educators, and donors can engage through financing, grant programs, events, or giving options, including planned gifts and farmland donations. Based in Owatonna, SMIF serves as a regional partner for building economic opportunity and more vibrant communities across southern Minnesota.
