The Shelton-McMurphey-Johnson House

SMJ House, managed by Shelton McMurphey Johnson Associates, is a 7,000 square foot Victorian House located in Eugene, Oregon. This beautiful house, owned by the City of Eugene, has been transformed into a museum that offers a glimpse into life in the 1930s for the Shelton McMurphey Family. When it first opened in 1994, only one floor was available for public viewing.

But now, all three floors are furnished and open to the public six days a week. SMJ House is operated by a dedicated team of passionate volunteers, a small part-time staff, and a Board of Directors. They work closely with the City of Eugene to ensure that the house is well-maintained and accessible to the community for tours and events.

The museum boasts impressive figures, including an average of 3,800 guests annually and an annual budget of approximately $62,000. It features 16 rooms, including four original bedrooms, and showcases over 100 tea cups and 110 nutcrackers. As a sustainably-managed tourism destination, SMJ House is committed to diversity and inclusion.

They strive to provide an inclusive and diverse space where all employees, volunteers, guests, and community partners feel valued, respected, and celebrated. By recognizing and eliminating iniquities, practicing open communication, and fostering diversity, SMJ House aims to be a model of diversity and inclusion for their community and beyond.
