The Southern Maine Middle School Hockey League is a youth hockey organization established in 1984 to provide a feeder league for high school programs. It brings together middle school students of varied experience and ability for a shared hockey experience, including players who may compete on different teams during the rest of the week. League games are generally held on Sunday afternoons, and students whose town or city does not have a team may petition to join a nearby team or one connected to their future high school.
The league supports member programs with registration, schedules, scores, standings, team contacts, coaching information, rink details, and guidance on equipment and inclement weather. It also hosts the Mariner Cup and provides bylaws, forms, and participant and parent conduct expectations. Its guidelines emphasize safe participation, fair opportunities, qualified adult leadership, education, sportsmanship, and enjoyment alongside opportunities for players seeking a more competitive environment. Players and coaches must register and be rostered before participating.
