Criado em 1941, o Sindicato Nacional dos Editores de Livros tem como finalidade o estudo e a coordenação das atividades editoriais, bem como a proteção e a representação legal da categoria de editores de livros e publicações culturais em todo o Brasil. Como representante da categoria editorial, o SNEL é filiado à International Publishers Association (IPA) e ao Centro Regional para el Fomento del Libro en America Latina y el Caribe (Cerlalc). O Sindicato mantém articulações permanentes com diversas entidades, tanto governamentais quanto privadas, com o objetivo de fomentar a política do livro e da leitura no país.
