The Social Workers’ Educational Trust (SWET) is an independent registered charity established in 1972 on the initiative of the British Association of Social Workers. Registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales as charity number 313789, it operates across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and is governed by its own trustees. SWET aims to help qualified social workers develop their knowledge and skills, encourage research into social work practice and education, and inform the public about the nature of social work.
Its support has included individual and team grants, scholarships and funding for professional development. The Trust also shares guidance and application information, publishes news and resources, and offers access to essays on social work practice and education, including a collection marking its fiftieth anniversary. BASW provides funding to help SWET operate and support applicants, and offers a broad programme of professional development courses.
From 25 September 2026, SWET’s operations are temporarily paused while trustees review its administration and funding allocation.
