SOFICO, the Walloon Society for Complementary Financing of Infrastructure, is a public-sector organisation dedicated to improving mobility and supporting economic development across Wallonia, Belgium. For around 30 years, it has contributed to transport infrastructure on both roads and waterways, including work to complete missing links in the Trans-European Transport Network. SOFICO manages, maintains and rehabilitates Wallonia’s strategic road network, with funding supported in part by the heavy-goods vehicle kilometre charge.
Its responsibilities also include granting concessions for motorway service areas and encouraging the development of carpool parking facilities. Beyond transport, SOFICO supports renewable energy projects through concessions, including hydroelectric and wind power, and operates telecommunications infrastructure to make use of its fibre-optic network. The organisation also works to develop smart motorways.
