About SOGC
SOGC, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, is a brand dedicated to the prevention of maternal mortality in Canada. With a mission to increase awareness and promote change, they strive to reduce the number of pregnancy-related deaths by addressing the challenges and complexities surrounding maternal mortality. By understanding factors that contribute to maternal deaths, they aim to develop programs focused on education, training, systems, and policies to prevent future deaths.
SOGC advocates for the implementation of a Canadian Confidential Enquiry System into maternal deaths, which would improve Canada's maternal death statistics. This system would generate vital information to understand how deaths can be prevented, inform networks at provincial and national levels, and identify trends and emerging issues. Moreover, SOGC supports the establishment of Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) across provinces and territories.
These committees play a critical role in determining preventability and recommending actions for future prevention. By conducting objective and standardized reviews of all maternal deaths, MMRCs have positively impacted maternal health worldwide. Through their comprehensive toolkit, publications, advocacy activities, and resources, SOGC strives to create a safer environment for pregnant individuals and reduce maternal mortality in Canada
