Soil

The Swiss Soil Science Society (BGS/SSP) is a professional and public-interest organization founded in 1975 to connect people and institutions engaged in or interested in soil science. Its more than 570 members include researchers, university and government staff, private-sector specialists, and other soil enthusiasts. The society promotes the development and dissemination of soil knowledge, supports professionals and quality assurance in their work, and advocates for the long-term preservation of healthy soils.

BGS/SSP offers members opportunities to exchange expertise, build professional contacts, collaborate through working groups, and attend events at reduced rates. Its annual conference features presentations and posters on a selected soil science topic, while a two-day field trip connects participants with soil profiles, sites, and relevant businesses. Working groups address topics such as soil mapping, classification, physical soil protection, education, and soil data. The society also raises public awareness through initiatives including Soil of the Year and publishes specialist information through its blog and document series.
