**Soils for Science** is an innovative citizen science program launched by the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland. This groundbreaking initiative aims to combat the rising threat of antibiotic-resistant infections, commonly known as superbugs, by harnessing Australia’s rich biodiversity. More than half of today's antibiotics are derived from microbes found in nature, and Australia's unique ecosystems provide an untapped resource for discovering new life-saving medicines.
Participants in the program can receive a soil sampling kit, collect samples from their local environment, and send these back for analysis. The data contributes to research focused on identifying new antibiotics and antifungals, critical in addressing the global health crisis posed by drug resistance. Engaging the community and fostering collaboration, Soils for Science not only empowers individuals in the fight against superbugs but also provides a platform for sharing findings and celebrating the fascinating world of soil microorganisms. Join the movement today to explore the hidden potential beneath our feet!
